It's been 25 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the US-led invasion of Afghanistan that brought Hamid Karzai, then a little-known tribal leader, to power. Two decades later, Karzai witnessed the chaotic withdrawal of American forces as the Taliban swept back into Kabul in 2021. While many people left Afghanistan, he chose to stay. Today, Karzai lives under virtual house arrest and rarely gives interviews. He says his eldest daughter, like all girls over the age of 12, is no longer able to go to school. In this conversation with Mishal Husain, he explains why he won’t send his daughters to be educated overseas, and why he remains hopeful for the future of his country. 00:00 Introduction from Mishal Husain 03:48 Afghanistan is our home 08:12 Education for girls 10:53 Talking to the Taliban 15:12 “I will never give up” 16:11 Twenty-five years since 9/11 18:26 Afghanistan’s relationship with the US 23:21 US-Israel war with Iran 26:31 Conflict with Pakistan 29:35 Life in Kabul 32:27 “I don't need to be in the government” 34:11 International recognition 36:57 A personal failure Read Mishal’s notes: https://www.bloomberg.com/mishal Contact The Mishal Husain Show mishalshow@bloomberg.net Watch Bloomberg Vodcasts: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLe4PRejZgr0MS0Tqk_zQl1LVVTdWuH2Di Subscribe to Bloomberg Podcasts: https://bit.ly/BloombergPodcasts Visit us: https://www.bloomberg.com/podcasts Visit our other YouTube channels: Bloomberg Television: https://www.youtube.com/@markets Bloomberg Originals: https://www.youtube.com/bloomberg For coverage on news, markets and more: http://www.bloomberg.com/video
