He is a nutritional therapy practitioner (NTP) in training and a certified personal trainer (CPT) through the Onnit Academy in Austin, TX. Evan shares lessons he’s learned from spending over 10,000 hours in the forest and natural world restoring farmland to park space, planting trees, reestablishing natural habitat, observing wildlife, and understanding how to use nature as medicine. #1 Nutrient Rhodiola—it’s a hearty herb that grows in really cold, nasty temperatures; it’s great to help mitigate the stress response. #1 Health Tip: Loneliness is severely detrimental to your health. Evan stresses to opinion leaders that we should all have a tribe and sense of community. Show Notes Evan discusses his Not Just Paleo podcast because many of his clients are doing a paleo diet but are still not well. Food is very important, but Evan helps people round out their health protocol. He first looks at food, and then he balances stress perception and sleep. Evan recommends disabling all notifications—email, text, and social media—to reduce the number of inputs. Evan suggests reading Steven Pressfield’s Do the Work. Conquer that resistance, take action, and then enjoy your time. Evan encourages living by the sun’s cycles—get up with the sun and do the work before checking email and social media. Forest bathing or taking in the forest atmosphere is a great way to drop salivary cortisol. The Japanese call it “forest bathing” to describe a short, leisurely walk in the woods. Most major cities in the US have major parks to walk through and help drop that cortisol. Walking in the woods barefoot is a great way to reconnect with nature and drop stress. It helps us to get grounded, feel reconnected, and be present. Earthing is the most important health discovery ever. Water immersions are a great finish-off to activate brain fat and improve sensations. Sunlight is one of the best natural stimulators of cortisol and the adrenal glands. EMFs (electromagnetic fields) and health: Non-native EMFs are deleterious to your body’s electrical system. EMFs are pollutants like any other toxins. Our hearts run on electrical impulses, and melatonin may contribute to preventing heart disease; EMFs can suppress production melatonin and alter moods. How to measure dirty electricity? Get a trifield meter or a microsurge meter (check Dave Stetzer’s microsurge meter). Plug it into your outlet—anything over 50 is not good. You don’t want anything over 1 millivolt. BOOK: Electrification and the Diseases of Civilization, Samuel Milham The best strategy is to simply turn off your cell phone. Take lavender and chamomile tea, along with L-theanine. Lie in bed for a few minutes before rising to help remember your dreams and evaluate what they mean. The conversion of short-term memory to long-term memory is one reason why dream recall is so important.
