Season 6 of American Nightmares is coming, and this time the story moves to Phoenix, Arizona, for a case known as The Canal Murders. In this special bridge episode between Season 5 and Season 6, Dan Zampillo sits down with retired investigator and criminal behavior expert Mike King, along with documentary filmmaker and journalist Brian Peter Falk, to talk about where American Nightmares has been and where it is going next. Season 5, Gardens of Evil, explored the Zion Society case and the long-term impact of child sexual abuse, criminal investigation, survivor voices, and the responsibility of telling painful stories with care. Mike reflects on what it was like to reopen a case he had buried for decades, reconnect with victims who are now adults, and see the story give voice to people who had carried trauma for years. Then the conversation turns to Season 6, The Canal Murders. In the early 1990s, two young women were brutally murdered while riding their bikes along the canal system in Phoenix. What followed was a decades-long investigation filled with false starts, cold case work, forensic genealogy, missed opportunities, and lingering questions about whether the man eventually tied to the crimes may have left a longer trail of violence. Brian Peter Falk shares what makes this case so compelling, including thousands of pages of police files, interviews with retired detectives, the role of local journalism, and the work required to understand a case that has been largely lost to time. Mike adds a criminal behavior perspective, explaining why cold case investigators often begin with the victim, the crime scene, and the environment before jumping to the suspect. This episode also looks at the relationship between law enforcement, journalism, podcasts, victims’ families, and the public. It asks difficult questions about justice, closure, family advocacy, technology, forensic genealogy, and what it means to keep a case alive decades after the crime. The Canal Murders is not just a story about two homicides. It is a story about memory, persistence, cold case investigation, victimology, and the possibility that one predator’s trail may be longer than anyone first understood.
