Lindsay Clancy's psychiatrist treated her fourteen times by video call before the morning her three children died in their Duxbury home — and told the jury she never once looked psychotic. That same courtroom later heard from the person who spent more time with Clancy than almost anyone: a hospital chaplain who visited her roughly two hundred times over three years. The chaplain testified that after Clancy woke up paralyzed from the fall that nearly killed her, she described a male voice ordering her to kill the children, then herself, or none of them would be safe. Then the prosecutor asked to see the chaplain's notes. In two hundred visits, that voice was never written down — not once, until now. Massachusetts law puts the burden on the prosecution once an insanity defense is raised, and the state has to convince twelve jurors beyond a reasonable doubt that Clancy was criminally responsible when she used exercise bands to kill her children. To win that, prosecutors need the jury to believe either the chaplain missed something devastating for three years, or Clancy built a story after she survived and has held onto it ever since. Phone records complicate it further — Clancy had searched "symptoms of postpartum psychosis" before the killings, timed her husband's errand, and ordered the takeout that got him out of the house. The defense says a medical system kept switching Clancy's medications without listening to what she was actually saying. The prosecution says the planning speaks for itself.
