Romy Reiner went to check on her parents because they weren't answering the door. She found her father. She called 911. And then she learned the person police suspected was her own brother. This look back is about the three people the headlines keep skipping past — and the impossible thing they're being asked to do. Jake, Romy, and Tracy woke up one December morning with parents and went to bed orphans. They now hold three roles at once that almost no family ever carries together: the ones who lost the most, the next of kin with legal standing in the case, and the family of the man accused of taking everything. Sources say they've cut Nick off completely. Sources also say they don't want him to face the ultimate punishment — though family wishes are, as experts put it, meaningful but not controlling. We revisit where things stood at the time of our reporting. But this segment goes somewhere most true crime won't. It's about what happens after — when the hearings end and the verdict lands and the family realizes the thing they were waiting for was never going to fix it. If he's convicted, their parents are still gone. If he's found not responsible by reason of mental illness, their parents are still gone. The trial delivers an outcome. It doesn't deliver peace. This is a hard, honest look at the trap of making your healing depend on an apology that may never come, a verdict that can't undo the cost, and a closure that has to be built rather than received. It's for anyone still waiting for an ending that makes sense.
