The charge got knocked down to harassment. The sentence: five years of probation, with every count running at the same time instead of stacking. Retired FBI special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer didn't hold back, calling the outcome a travesty and warning it hands a blueprint to the wave of copycats already flooding investigators with fake claims, a group agents have started calling the TMZ Twelve. But the hoaxer isn't the only source of contradiction in this case. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has spent months fielding questions about discrepancies in his own record, and when a reporter pressed him, his answer was to tell the man to enjoy his hit piece. The FBI and the Sheriff's Department can't even agree on who's in charge, one saying local authorities lead, the other redirecting ransom note questions straight back to the Bureau within the hour. Add in a retired agent who says there's real disagreement inside the FBI over whether some of the evidence is genuine, and a piece of key evidence that flew to Florida and back before anyone bothered running it against a database, and you start to see why nobody trusts the official version. Then there's Kash Patel, who told a podcast audience his agents were locked out for days, only for one of his own special agents to stand beside Sheriff Nanos at a press conference days later. Nancy Guthrie is still missing. Nobody has been charged in her disappearance. And the people supposedly working the case can't get their story straight.
