Prosecutors decoded the prison calls. Mackenzie Shirilla and her mother Natalie created a fabricated language to get around the monitoring system on recorded jail lines. In one of those decoded conversations, Mackenzie asked her mother to do something that changes how you see this entire family. Natalie’s response on a separate recorded call was to tell her daughter that rehabilitation programs are for “actual criminals” — not her. Thirty-six conduct violations. Guilty on thirty-two. The woman convicted of killing two people at a hundred miles an hour doesn’t think she needs to be rehabilitated. And her family agrees. Natalie Shirilla has called the Russo family “evil” on a recorded line. She has encouraged Mackenzie to write a book. Steve Shirilla appeared in the Netflix documentary, said on camera he had no issue with his daughter’s substance use, and lost his teaching position at a Catholic school as a result. Inside the Ohio Reformatory for Women, nothing has shifted. A fellow inmate compared Shirilla to Regina George — daily makeup routines, social positioning, running the facility like a high school hallway. No acknowledgment of what brought her there. The Ohio Supreme Court declined Shirilla’s appeal. Her earliest parole eligibility is 2037. A look back at the most compelling stories of the week.
