Bishop T.D. Jakes is a world-renowned bishop, author and filmmaker. Over the course of his career, he has won a Grammy, produced and starred in many feature films and authored 40 books. He spends his life speaking and sharing his mission with audiences all over the world. In 1982, he started his first church in Smithers, West Virginia, at the young age of 25 with 10 members in an old storefront. His church grew and changed locations over time but Bishop Jakes’ mission remained the same: help his community. In 1996, he founded the Potter’s House, a non-denominal church in Dallas, Texas, that currently has over 5,000 members. Through a livestream, people all over the world listen to Bishop Jakes’ sermons for spiritual guidance. In this episode of the Tony Robbins podcast, Bishop Jakes sits down with Tony to discuss his newest book, “Don’t Drop the Mic,” as well as what he’s learned through his ministry and business success. During this conversation, Bishop Jakes discusses the large role the church has played in African American communities and why faith is so important to achieve success and live a happy life. In his book, he weaves together the importance of faith, the power of diversity and how we must continue to learn and grow in order to succeed. In his book, he also discusses how important it is for us to continue talking to each other, even when conversations are painful or uncomfortable. He discusses how we will never grow and change if we don’t step out of our comfort zone and start hard conversations that will encourage us to learn, evolve and grow. However, he makes it clear that it is not enough to talk to each other. We have to truly listen and respect each other. By giving time to each other, researching each other and learning from each other, we evolve. We get better. In this conversation with Tony, Bishop Jakes drives home the idea of speaking, listening and growing. In his ability to truly hear others while continuing to speak his truth, he has been able to create a life that many look up to. Learn more about Bishop T.D.
