Celeste Rivas Hernandez was fourteen years old. She'd been reported missing from Lake Elsinore three separate times. She was gone for over a year before anyone found her — and the person who did was a tow yard worker who noticed something wrong with the way a car smelled. That car was registered to David Anthony Burke, the recording artist known as D4VD. Her remains were inside the front trunk. Burke has since been charged with first-degree murder with special circumstances, abuse of a child under fourteen, and mutilation of remains. He has pleaded not guilty. The special circumstances — which include allegations of lying in wait, financial motive, and eliminating a witness — make this a case where prosecutors could seek the maximum penalty allowed by law. His defense team has maintained his innocence and requested an expedited public hearing. But the path from discovery to arrest took seven months. For most of that time, the investigation was conducted behind layers of secrecy — a sealed autopsy, a secret grand jury, and a gag order the medical examiner's own office publicly fought against. Investigators say tracking data allegedly places Burke in a remote, deserted stretch of Santa Barbara County in the middle of the night during the window they believe Celeste died. He was reportedly there for hours. Burke's own circle allegedly believed Celeste was a nineteen-year-old college student. She wasn't. She was a child. Reports indicate she was connected to Burke through the messaging platform Discord as early as 2022. Detectives seized electronics from his rental property, found a burn cage incinerator on the premises, and carried evidence boxes out of a separate address the night of the arrest.
