This Marine Survived an IED—Then Scored the Goal That Won Gold Episode 128 of The Wild Chaos Podcast is streaming NOW on YouTube and all major podcast platforms! Marine Scout Sniper Josh Sweeney survived an IED blast in Afghanistan that took both of his legs. Years later, he would put on another American uniform and score the game-winning goal that helped Team USA capture Paralympic gold. This is the incredible story of what happened between those two moments. Josh takes Bam inside his journey from growing up in Arizona and joining the United States Marine Corps to becoming a Scout Sniper and deploying to Afghanistan. Then everything changed. While moving through a compound in Afghanistan, Josh was hit by an IED. He remained conscious after the explosion and lay critically wounded for hours while Marines fought to reach him through an area contaminated with additional IEDs. But surviving the blast was only the beginning. Josh talks openly about losing both legs above the knee, severe injuries to his hands, losing his independence, rebuilding his identity, learning how to function again, and refusing to allow his circumstances to become his identity. Eventually, adaptive sports gave Josh another mission. He discovered sled hockey, earned a spot on Team USA and once again found himself representing the United States on the world stage. Then came Sochi. Playing Russia for Paralympic gold, Josh found himself alone with the goalie and scored the goal that would ultimately win Team USA the gold medal. Today, Josh is a two-time Paralympic gold medalist, father, adaptive athlete and entrepreneur behind JS Adaptive Sports, where he uses his experience to help other adaptive athletes get the equipment and resources they need. This conversation isn't simply about surviving war. It's about what happens when the life you built disappears—and you have to decide who you're going to become next. Marine Corps. Scout Snipers. Afghanistan. IED survival. Combat injuries. Amputation. Recovery. Identity. Adaptive sports. Team USA. Paralympic sled hockey. Gold medals. Fatherhood. Resilience. Purpose. Instead of asking: “Why me?” Josh learned to ask: “What’s next?” Watch Episode 128 of The Wild Chaos Podcast with Josh Sweeney.
