According to Colonel Douglas MacGregor, Western leaders—particularly in Europe—are engaging in public-relations efforts to create the illusion of diplomacy while avoiding the core Russian demands. Russia, he says, is not interested in temporary ceasefires but in a long-term European security architecture, something the West has shown no willingness to address. Two major unresolved issues undermine peace talks: security guarantees for Ukraine and territorial concessions. MacGregor dismisses the idea that the U.S. or Europe could realistically offer NATO-style (Article 5) guarantees, calling it implausible and dishonest. On territory, he stresses that Russia has made clear it will not compromise on the four contested oblasts, directly contradicting Western narratives about possible partial settlements. The interview frames Western diplomacy as denial and delay, driven by leaders unwilling to admit strategic failure. MacGregor contends that militarily the war is effectively decided: Russia has prevailed, NATO has been exposed as incapable of sustained offensive warfare, and Ukraine cannot defend itself. Continuing the conflict, he argues, will only cause more destruction—particularly to Ukraine’s infrastructure—without changing the outcome. He concludes that peace requires acknowledging reality: Russia has won, borders will change, and Ukraine must accept neutrality. Until Western governments and Ukrainian leadership accept this, the war will continue unnecessarily, fueled by illusion, pride, and political theater rather than genuine diplomacy.
