Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to the University of Idaho murders, and the internet still hasn't let go of two theories that came before that plea ever happened. Tony Brueski takes on both, starting with the one that did real damage to a real person. Years before Kohberger was arrested, online sleuths had already convicted someone else, a grieving young man who'd just lost the woman he loved. His only crime was calling her over and over that morning, for a reason that turns out to be completely innocent. From there, the theories multiply: why the surviving roommates waited hours to call 911, what their private writings do and don't prove, a theory that they were spared because they were involved, and alternate suspects a judge personally dismissed as rank speculation. Then there's the physical evidence conspiracy, the idea that Kohberger's DNA was planted on the knife sheath found in a murdered student's bed. The lab that processed it has said plainly that what they found wasn't a faint trace, it was hundreds of times more genetic material than a typical case produces. We walk through the unidentified blood inside the house, the DNA mixture under a victim's fingernails that didn't match Kohberger, the hair people swear was planted, the claim that genetic genealogy was used to frame him and hidden from the court, and the Amazon order for that exact knife. No clean motive isn't the same as the wrong man, and a guilty plea on top of the DNA, the phone, the car, and the scanner data isn't what innocent pleas look like. We separate the real gaps in this case from the noise built around them, and we explain why fixated strangers are exactly as dangerous as this case suggests, even without a headline-ready motive attached.
