Robert Barnes is an American lawyer, free speech champion, and political commentator. Barnes discusses why populism and resistance to the concentration of power in an elite are at the centre of the American experience, and how “America First” was intended to be a strategic retreat from empire and instead restore the foundations of the American Republic. The ability to break away from perpetual war and imperial follies is proving to be difficult, and Trump—much like his predecessors—is hardly in control of his own government.
