That model is not legal everywhere. The Law: In North Carolina, contracting for whole-home water filtration/treatment installs generally requires a plumbing license (or a Restricted Limited Plumbing Contractor license that specifically covers filtration systems). North Carolina statute GS 87-21 explicitly includes these systems. Subcontracting the work while you are the unlicensed provider is typically not compliant. A general contractor license does not cover plumbing trades or substitute for the required plumbing license. Pure equipment sales with fully independent homeowner–plumber contracts may be structured differently, but the model described in this episode (you as the provider, subcontracting the labor) is the one that raises the licensing issue. How We Treat Guest Claims: We validate income and timeframe claims with our guests as best we can. We do not do a full audit of their business, licenses, or local compliance. That would be unrealistic for a free podcast where no money is exchanged with guests (aside from travel reimbursement). Laws vary by state and city. What worked for one operator in one market may require different licenses where you live. Do Your Own Research: Before you start a business or take on financial risk, check your state and local licensing rules, talk to a licensed contractor or attorney if needed, and confirm what you can and cannot legally sell or subcontract. This episode is tactical storytelling meant to encourage entrepreneurship — not legal, tax, or regulatory advice. ━━━━ Got a story about making money in a surprising way?
