Nobody really thinks about the daughter of the serial killer. Victoria Heuermann said those words in a documentary, and they should haunt everyone following this case. Because while the world focused on Rex Heuermann's DNA, his planning documents, and his burner phones — Victoria was losing everything she thought she knew about her life. Her dad. Her home. Her childhood. Her identity. All of it rewritten in an instant. The documentary showed a young woman cycling between depression and anger since the arrest — whose sense of self has been shattered. And then it showed her sitting across from her father in a jailhouse room, hearing him admit to killing eight women in the house where she grew up, and forgiving him on the spot. She asked him something no daughter should ever have to ask: did you ever think about me when you were doing this? He said no. The two worlds never crossed. Then the documentary went further — inside the sessions where Rex described details no courtroom would have produced. A four-day cycle he refined over years. Body disposals he timed with a stopwatch, competing against himself. Crime scene photos he reviews in his cell while claiming he can't connect the person who did those things to the person he is now. FBI profiler John Douglas compared him to BTK — and said Rex had something Dennis Rader was jealous of. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott breaks down both: what happens to a child who discovers their parent is a serial killer, and what the documentary revealed about the mind that did the killing. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting.
