Dr. Staci Turner is Mississippi's chief medical examiner, and she's the one sitting on Nolan Wells' sealed autopsy results. She's also the same examiner who, in 2021, ruled Damien Cameron's in-custody death "undetermined" — despite her own autopsy documenting internal neck bleeding consistent with compression injuries from deputies who restrained him until he stopped breathing. Three independent forensic pathologists reviewed that same evidence for the New York Times and Mississippi Today. All three called it a homicide. Dr. Michael Baden, former chief medical examiner of New York City, didn't hedge: "homicide, absolutely." A Rutgers pathologist said there was nothing about the case that should have been undetermined. A grand jury relied in part on Turner's finding and declined to charge the deputies involved. One of those deputies, Hunter Elward, is now in federal prison — not for Cameron's death, but for his role in the Rankin County "Goon Squad" torture cases. That's the track record Nolan Wells' family is up against.
