The primary duty of a referee is to ensure fairness in the fight and protect the health and safety of the competitors.

“My main thing, as I said, this, you know, they're putting their health on the line. Every my main thing and is to have them fairly fight and, you know, health like them leaving and being able to fight again or whatever they want to do again, right?”

He suggests that referees must act decisively when a fighter loses consciousness to prevent prolonged damage.

“You could tell he went limp there and he was still holding for a second before before Herb stepped in.”

Brendan believes that eye pokes in UFC should result in an automatic disqualification for the offending fighter.

“If Ciryl Gane and Jon Jones, if you went, hey, new rule. If you poke in the eye and they cannot continue, you they automatically win the fight, you lose. I guarantee you eye poking stops.”

Bryan agrees that UFC fighters should be expected to attempt to continue fighting through eye injuries.

“Being poked in the eye is illegal, Brendan, but to fight with one eye is very common. The opponent's trying to hit your eye. He's trying to bust up and make your make your nose bleed. So So that part of it does have question for guys like Anthony and I.”
