The United States is responsible for its own economic inequalities rather than being a victim of unfair trade practices by other nations.

“But we continue to blame everybody else in the world that we designed and policed after World War II. We're the richest country in the world ever. We're not the world's victims. If we have inequalities in this country, that's on us.”

The speaker believes tariffs are a necessary measure to protect national security interests and bring critical manufacturing back to the United States.

“So I didn't even think the tariffs were a strong enough measure to enforce that but they were a step in the right direction.”

The speaker argues that the Supreme Court's rejection of the tariffs was a procedural issue rather than a ruling on the merits, and that Congress could retroactively ratify the policy if it chose to.

“What the Supreme Court said very narrowly, keep me honest here, was the president did not have the authority to put those things in place because he needed to get permission from Congress.”

He argues that Trump's tariffs are part of a populist facade that serves as a Trojan horse for corporate deregulation and tax cuts for the wealthy.

“So he rolls in as a populace he opens up the hatch and then next to you know Elon Musk and all the tech Bros come out of the horse and go give us giant tax cuts give us deregulation fire everyone at the SEC fire all the inspector generals why because we're going to rob the place blind”

He believes Trump's focus on fair trade and onshoring employment in the automotive industry is reasonable and comparable to the protectionist practices of other major economies.

“it's totally fair to say I want more employment in the United States for cars sold in the United States”

He believes the United States should prioritize its own manufacturing and industrial base over maintaining existing trade relationships with countries like Canada and Mexico.

“I'm telling you like the Bible is full of wisdom and there's all these passages about how valuable a good wife is and it and really if you have a good wife just a peace of mind knowing that you're fully aligned on things she's never going to stab your back it's literally like having a guaranteed bes”

The economist supports the idea that the Supreme Court's procedural ruling on tariffs was correct, but notes the administrative uncertainty caused by the tariffs has been burdensome for small business

“I have friends who run small businesses. It has been brutal on them because not only are there the tariffs and you don't know what's coming, but there actually a lot of costs, administrative costs if you're a small business, if you're importing.”

The government must realign trade policies to prioritize fair markets and American interests to ensure long-term national prosperity.

“There is no doubt that that realignment has to happen for America to continue to thrive and lead on the world stage for another 250 years.”
