He believes the current state of Iowa agriculture, characterized by farm consolidation and corporate control, is damaging rural communities and must be reversed to preserve Iowa's heritage.

“what that actually means is every time one of these farms goes away or disappears, there's life that we lose in our rural communities. And our rural communities in Iowa, in the Midwest, they're on life support.”

A transition to localized, low-input agriculture is necessary to ensure food security after the decline of global industrial distribution systems.

“the project that I'm doing with this experimental farming I'm not trying to grow vegetables for the local neighbors and like make a pittance like ruining my body out in the sun I'm trying to develop systems that have the potential to endure when there are no inputs available”

The widespread application of glyphosate on food crops is an unacceptable health risk that is being ignored by authorities.

“So, just keep that in mind. This is a toxic carcinogen that we're spraying on our food. Everybody knows this. Yet, it's still being sprayed on our food.”

The speaker argues that massive agribusiness consolidation creates structural inequities and increases risks for the entire food system.

“Consolidation creates all sorts of structural inequities and uh, kind of increases risk in a lot of ways.”

The current heavy use of glyphosate and other pesticides is driving a health crisis in children and families, necessitating a transition to regenerative organic agriculture.

“We moms who have sick children who have chemical sensitivities, autism, autoimmune issues, cancer. We have kids who have, you know, they're they're wiping their feces on the wall in the middle of the night because their autism is so severe they can't walk. They can't talk.”

Agriculture is a critical technology that has enabled human population growth but requires technological improvements to overcome environmental degradation and resource constraints.

“and so agriculture went from being you know something that humans didn't really grasp to being this tool that allowed our populations globally to swell without making enough calories we would not have been able to survive and grow our populations”

Farming is a profitable and viable business if managed correctly.

“it's true farming is a gold mine so farming is the oldest profession that human beings have been involved in more than thousands of years and it wouldn't have survived this long if it was not profitable”

He believes anyone can successfully garden by focusing on cultivating the right environmental conditions for the plants rather than trying to force their growth.

“I always like to say like well, people will say I grew this or I can't grow this. And the way I think about it at least is the truth is no one's really ever grown a plant. Like as a gardener, what you're really doing is you're putting a plant in the environment in which it it knows how to grow best.”

The current supply-side shock in fertilizer prices is occurring at the worst possible time for farmers, who are entering their planting season.

“I couldn't think of a worst time to have a supply side shock and resulting surge in fertilizer prices for farmers effectively just about everywhere. Second quarter is the timeline when the northern hemisphere starts their planting season.”

Pat Spinosa asserts that rural America and agricultural industries need to increase cross-industry collaborations to better highlight and promote the importance of farming.

“The SEC should be celebrating one weekend a year of every team wearing something that supports American farmers. Like you have cuz you have to have cross collaborations with industries to make it cool, to make people want to do it.”
