The Mona Lisa is a painting that is more interesting than its reputation as a ubiquitous object might suggest.

“It's a painting that is a lot more interesting than than I had thought.”

The painting has acquired its special status largely due to its association with Leonardo rather than its own artistic qualities.

“to quote Donald Cissoon, the Mona acquired its special status because of its association with Leonardo, not the other way round.”
