Modding can become problematic when extensive changes make games difficult to maintain or restore after technical issues.

“I applied so many damn mods to my Elder Scrolls 4 install that when I went to reformat my computer because I got a virus or something and I went to load my game again, it couldn't because I had so many mods. And then that was in the days before like convenient mod workshops and stuff.”

Modders should be avoided for first playthroughs of games to ensure the player experiences the developer's intended artistic direction.

“For a first playthrough, I don't think I'd actually touch mods uh just to get the experience. There is a lot of artistic direction that was put into these games. And like David was saying earlier, you miss out on a lot if you go and just start jumping into the modding right aways.”
