John Lovell argues that veterans must proactively find a new mission and band of brothers to successfully integrate into civilian life.

Veterans must actively pursue new passions and purposes after leaving the service to fill the void left by their military career.

“when you leave that you have to try new things otherwise you'll never fill the void all right and don't try to fill it with the exact thing or something as big”

Leaving the military is extremely difficult because it becomes the primary identity for special operators, and there are few transferable skills for the civilian world.

“When you transition away from it, you never thought it was going to be hard. You thought you were going to transition. You were going to find that same love and passion, energy you had for being in the military. And then when you don't find it, it's a huge fall from grace.”

The transition from military service to civilian life is exceptionally difficult, and civilians do not adequately understand the challenges veterans face.

“I don't think people understand um how hard that transition is you know I mean obviously military guys do but civilians don't they don't think about it”
