Rory Stewart observes that African countries have experienced a significant shift away from the democratic transitions of the 1990s towards increased authoritarianism.

“fast forward to today, Africa is in a very very different situation. There are still some countries which are fully you know going in a democratic direction including really big cornerstone countries like Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa but there is the authoritarian story.”
