“So we're looking at a world where we have levels of unemployment we've never seen before. Not talking about 10% unemployment, which is scary, but 99%.”

The rapid advancement of AI and robotics threatens to replace nearly all human cognitive and physical labor, creating mass joblessness without existing transition or redistribution plans.

“If you look at the mission statement on OpenAI's website or all the websites, their mission is to be able to replace all forms of human economic labor in the economy. Meaning an AI that can do all the cognitive labor meaning labor of the mind.”

He anticipates a significant period of job disruption caused by the automation of administrative and cognitive labor.

“I think over the next five years maybe seven years is is likely to be automated and so there's going to be a very disruptive transitionary period where we need people to um you know retrain and resale and we'll have to fund that and support that”

Nathan Labenz believes AI will lead to significant headcount reductions across many industries as models increasingly handle complex, high-volume tasks.

“but I do expect that you will see significant headcount reduction in a lot of these places and the software one is really interesting because the elasticities are really unknown.”

He expresses concern that AI and robotics will lead to massive economic disruption and job displacement, emphasizing that these technologies are driven by profit-seeking billionaires.

“And I think many of them haven't really absorbed Keynes, that if the workers don't get paid, there's nobody to buy their products. And they haven't really thought through the massive social disruption we'll get if we get very high unemployment.”

Engaging with AI is essential to staying relevant in the current economy and avoiding becoming obsolete.

“It's here to stay and it's not going anywhere. And you also don't want to be left behind. So, this is something that is going to continue to grow and if you don't want to become a fossil, you have to at least start to play around with it.”

He advises individuals to adopt and learn AI tools immediately to maintain their professional competitiveness.

“My immediate answer is jump in and learn those tools. Okay. Whatever your job is, don't resist the wave. As a matter of fact, ride the wave.”
