Chad Johnson claims that having a 99 overall rating in Madden does not translate to being a 99 overall player on the field.

“Honestly, Oo, I really never understood it because just because you're 99 on the game, that don't mean you're 99 on the field. because you 96, 84, well, whatever. That don't mean you like that now.”

Shannon Sharpe argues that Madden ratings are based on statistics and current performance rather than previous achievements or career accolades.

“You don't get ratings based off accolades. And know we know he won the Super Bowl. The rating is based off the Oh my god. How You know what? Don't worry about it.”
