Almost everyone following the Nolan Wells case has seen the viral video from Horn Island, and almost everyone believes it shows the eighteen-year-old in his final recorded moments. One of the people actually standing in that water says the voice everybody has been analyzing belongs to him, not to Nolan, and he gave investigators a full statement before he ever said it publicly. That claim is either the biggest correction in this case or it is nothing, and there is one physical detail that decides which. Nolan went to Horn Island on the Fourth of July and never made the trip back. His body was found in the water off the island on July 6. What has happened since has convinced a lot of people that information is being deliberately held back from the public, and this breaks that belief down claim by claim to see which parts hold. We go through what has actually been released in this case, including the dispatch audio, the boat's tracking data, and the state agency report, and who pried each of those loose. We go through what is still sealed and what the law actually says about it, including one Mississippi statute about who is entitled to an autopsy report that almost nobody covering this has mentioned. We look at the material that spread as proof and then fell apart when somebody checked it, and what that has cost a group of teenagers who are getting threats. And we go back to Rasheem Carter and to Rankin County, because Mississippi earned this suspicion. What those cases actually reveal about how these investigations fail is the opposite of what most people expect.
