Unlike past short, low-intensity missions, this would require prolonged effort against a capable and prepared adversary. A key first step would be SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses)—likely preceded by cyber, space, and possibly covert ground actions. The “Wild Weasel” mission, originating in the Vietnam War, was designed to provoke enemy radar systems into activating so they could be detected and destroyed. Over time, this role has been carried out by aircraft such as the F-100, F-105, F-4, F-16, and now the F-35. These aircraft use tools like the AGM-88 HARM (High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile) to home in on emitting radar sites. However, modern systems like the Russian-designed S-300 (and potentially S-400 variants) are far more advanced than older systems. They can: Track and target multiple aircraft simultaneously Coordinate across dispersed radar and launcher units Use mobility (“shoot and scoot” tactics) Employ electronic countermeasures Practice “cooperative blinking,” where different radars alternate emissions to complicate targeting These systems are not stationary or isolated; they can be spread out, concealed, and networked together, making them difficult to eliminate quickly. Destroying them would require coordinated formations, careful threat reactions, and precise use of missiles and bombs—often while under fire. The challenge increases because many potential targets—nuclear facilities, regime infrastructure, and IRGC military sites—are deep inside Iranian territory. That means aircraft would likely need to penetrate Iranian airspace for hundreds of nautical miles, greatly increasing exposure to layered air defenses. Overall, the discussion emphasizes that neutralizing Iran’s air defenses would not be quick or simple. It would likely require sustained, large-scale operations against a dense and modern integrated air defense network before follow-on strike missions could proceed safely.
