Sandra Birchmore made a homemade sign, sprinkled with glitter, that said "Congratulations, you're going to be a father," and put her ultrasound on it. The man it was for was a Stoughton police officer she'd met at 12, in a youth program his department ran, and he is charged in federal court with killing her. This is the complete Sandra Birchmore story in one episode: the Explorers years, the death, the investigation that called it suicide, and the trial that opens October 5, 2026. Stoughton's own internal report found that instructor Matthew Farwell's inappropriate relationship with Sandra began in the spring of 2013, when she was 15. It found his twin brother and the deputy chief who ran the program had inappropriate relationships with her as well. The state has never charged any of them. In December 2020 she told Farwell she was pregnant. Prosecutors say he called her the worst person on the face of the earth, put her in a headlock, and said he wished she would die. On January 20, 2021, a friend reported him to the Stoughton Police Department, and the FBI says the employee who took the call gave it to Farwell. Twelve days later Sandra was dead. Investigators had the building video within two days and had already written her death up as a suicide. Farwell's interview happened in a parking lot with nothing recorded. He turned down a DNA request through his lawyer and the state let it go. The medical examiner ruled suicide and the Norfolk DA walked away. It took Sandra's family, the Boston Globe, Dr. Michael Baden, and the FBI to get Farwell arrested in August 2024. He has pleaded not guilty, his defense says she took her own life, and a federal judge has ruled the jury can read her journals.
