Daniel Davis Deep Dive Merch: Etsy store https://www.etsy.com/shop/DanielDavisDeepDive?ref=seller-platform-mcnav Lt Col Daniel Davis & Jim Jatras discuss reports that three U.S. aircraft were shot down near Iranian air defense zones, questioning whether they were hit by Iranian systems or possibly even friendly fire from Kuwait. They note it’s unclear how close together the incidents occurred, but all six crew members survived, which they view as fortunate. They speculate that Iran’s remaining air defense capabilities may be stronger than publicly acknowledged, potentially bolstered by Russian and Chinese equipment — and possibly even personnel helping operate advanced systems. The shootdowns are seen as an early sign that Iranian defenses are not yet significantly degraded. The conversation then shifts to criticism of U.S. leadership messaging. They question claims that the U.S. “didn’t start this war” and push back against rhetoric framing the conflict as defensive retaliation. They argue that portraying Iran as the aggressor ignores longstanding U.S. military presence in the region. They also challenge the feasibility of the stated objectives of Operation Epic Fury — described as destroying Iran’s missiles, missile production, navy, security infrastructure, and nuclear capabilities — arguing that Iran’s size, terrain, and decades of preparation make achieving these goals through air power alone highly doubtful. They question whether regime change is realistic without ground forces and where such a force could even stage from. The speakers express concern that the U.S. may be seeking a quick political victory, particularly ahead of domestic elections, but warn that a prolonged conflict, rising casualties, regional instability (including in places like Bahrain), and oil infrastructure attacks could escalate the situation. They conclude that if early aircraft losses are occurring just days into the campaign, it suggests a long and costly conflict ahead rather than a rapid “mission accomplished” outcome.
