On Dec. 6, 2023, Anthony Polito, 67, entered the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus and opened fire inside the Frank and Estella Beam Hall. He killed Patricia Navarro Velez, 39, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang, 64, and Naoko Takemaru, 69. All were professors at the university. A fourth victim, Daraboth “Bot” Rith, who was visiting assistant professor, was shot ten times, and survived the ordeal. Police killed Polito, who was fleeing the scene. Investigators believe Polito target the university as it "symbolized an institution, was close to his home and because he was not hired when he applied there."
