Clark Pingree starts with the good — what was genuinely positive in his life as a Latter-day Saint — and then describes always having known he was gay, long before he had language for it. He talks about trying to cure himself, sitting through unkind talk at church, his frustration with the options the Church laid out for gay members, and what excommunication for homosexuality actually meant in practice. But the interview does not end in grievance: Pingree makes a case for why the Church and its members should care, for the virtues he sees in gay marriage, and for a reading of scripture and continuing revelation he believes could make room for people like him. He closes with his dream for the Church he was raised in. Recorded in 2006 for John Dehlin's LDS Homosexuality interview project. Short excerpts were first released on YouTube in 2008; this is the first time the complete interview has been published.
