Carolyn Ball is a lesbian Latter-day Saint who never wanted to leave. She begins with what she loves about the Church — the community, the doctrine, the life she built inside it — and then describes discovering something about herself that she did not choose, and that did not go away no matter how faithfully she waited for it to. What follows is her account of the choice the Church offered her in 2006, as she understood it: a life of solitude, or excommunication. She talks about sitting in a meetinghouse hearing unkind talk about people like her, about her children, and about what the Church loses when it loses members like her.
