Crooke suggests the hysteria stems from misguided European efforts to pressure Russia into accepting a Ukraine settlement that effectively “NATO-izes” Ukraine under another name—through European troops, a ceasefire, and security guarantees—without addressing Russia’s core demand for a new European security architecture involving the U.S. Russia, he says, rejects ceasefires designed to rearm Ukraine and insists on structural solutions. He argues negotiations are stalled because Europe and Ukraine refuse territorial concessions or constitutional changes related to NATO, making proposals unrealistic. Putin, by contrast, is portrayed as open to diplomacy but firm on security fundamentals. Crooke also claims Russia and China seek a broader strategic accommodation with the U.S., possibly via joint Arctic development, but that U.S. and European elites oppose any outcome that appears as a Russian “victory.” Finally, he frames Europe’s stance as partly ideological and messianic—casting the conflict as a moral struggle of good versus evil—while Europe simultaneously faces a deeper crisis: declining U.S. leadership, the erosion of “Pax Americana,” uncertainty about NATO’s future, and worsening economic conditions.
