Dan Markel won a custody fight against his ex-wife's family, and a judge told Wendi Adelson she couldn't move their sons out of state. Prosecutors say her mother Donna offered Markel a million dollars to change that ruling. When he refused, they say the Adelsons found another way — two men driven up from Miami in a rented Prius to shoot the 41-year-old FSU law professor twice in the head in his own garage, hours after he'd dropped his kids at preschool. Investigators traced the money to a family dental office near Fort Lauderdale: 44 checks signed by the grandmother, $138,000 routed through a woman who never worked a single day at the practice, and a toll transponder receipt marking every mile of the killers' drive. Charlie Adelson, the periodontist brother-in-law pulling in three million a year, allegedly orchestrated the whole thing and paid for it through that same dental office — monthly installments, cash his mother washed before handing it over. Then he took the witness stand and told the jury he was the victim, claiming the hitmen threatened to kill him unless he paid a third of a million dollars within 48 hours, and that his mother's checks were really an extortion payoff. Prosecutor Georgia Cappleman had one question for him: do extortionists send the victim's girlfriend to pick up the money? The jury took three hours to convict.
