Donna Adelson and Wendi Adelson occupy very different positions in the Dan Markel murder-for-hire case, but one handwritten jailhouse script pulls the family story into a single frame. Drina Bernhardt testified that Donna wrote questions and answers for her to memorize and use against Katherine Magbanua, and an FDLE handwriting analyst testified that Donna wrote the script. Bernhardt said Donna promised her $10,000 and a grand piano in exchange for false testimony. Donna's defense challenged Bernhardt's credibility and argued she had reason to help herself in her own criminal case. Prosecutors also highlighted 44 checks Donna signed to Magbanua after the murder; the defense said Donna wrote them at Charlie's direction because she believed his extortion story. The jury ultimately convicted Donna of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation after roughly three hours of deliberation. Wendi's portion of the record centers on Jeffrey Lacasse. He testified that five days before Markel was shot, Wendi told him Charlie Adelson had explored "all options" for the "Danny Markel problem," including hiring a hitman for about $15,000. Wendi denied making that statement. Lacasse also testified that Wendi questioned him about a Friday drive that would take him near Markel's home, then asked him not to contact her for a week. On the morning of the murder, a Geek Squad technician was at Wendi's home repairing the television Charlie had given her after joking that a TV was cheaper than a hitman. Wendi testified that the TV was not code for murder. One week after Charlie's 2023 conviction, authorities arrested Donna at Miami International Airport as she and Harvey prepared to travel to Vietnam on one-way tickets. At sentencing, Donna maintained her innocence and said she had never received a parking ticket. Judge Stephen Everett cited her "utter lack of remorse," while Wendi remains uncharged in Markel's death.
