Her family called it a happy vacation. A federal grand jury is calling it something else entirely. Anna Kepner was eighteen years old — a cheerleader from Titusville, Florida, weeks from graduation, with dreams of joining the Navy and becoming a K-9 officer. She was found dead in her stateroom aboard the Carnival Horizon on November 7, 2025, under the bed, wrapped in a blanket and covered in life vests. The medical examiner ruled it a homicide by mechanical asphyxiation. Security cameras on the ship reportedly showed her sixteen-year-old stepbrother Timothy Hudson was the only person entering and exiting the room that night. Anna's younger brother was outside the stateroom and reportedly heard violent sounds coming from inside. For months, the case was processed behind sealed juvenile proceedings. The public was told there was no indication of assault beyond the asphyxiation. Then a federal grand jury returned a superseding indictment on March 10 that changed the understanding of this case completely — charging Hudson as an adult with first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse. The case was formally transferred to adult court on April 10 after a federal magistrate approved the government's request. The details that have emerged carry a weight that's hard to put into words. An ex-boyfriend's father has alleged he witnessed Hudson attempt to climb on top of Anna during a FaceTime call. He described Anna as scared of her stepbrother, saying Hudson reportedly always carried a large knife and appeared obsessed with her. Anna was reportedly reluctant to go on the trip. Her father Christopher Kepner had married Hudson's mother Shauntel in December 2024 — less than a year before the cruise. Hudson was on ADHD and insomnia medication and reportedly had not taken his insomnia medication for two nights running. His mother texted his father afterward saying he kept repeating he couldn't remember anything. He was released to an uncle's custody under GPS monitoring with no unsupervised contact with anyone under eighteen. Prosecutors have now filed a motion seeking to revoke his release and detain him pending trial. If convicted, he faces life in federal prison. He is sixteen years old. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
