A judge looked at the charges against Anna Kepner's accused killer and admitted something stunning: if the defendant were an adult, he'd already be behind bars. Then the judge ended the hearing without deciding anything — and the sixteen-year-old walked out the front door while cameras rolled. Anna was eighteen, on a Carnival cruise with her blended family, when she was found dead in the stateroom she'd been sharing with her stepbrother. Timothy Hudson now faces first-degree murder and an additional serious federal charge in federal court. At the detention hearing, prosecutors argued he's a danger and pushed hard for him to be held until trial. The judge called this case a "different animal" — acknowledged that an adult in the same situation would almost certainly be detained — and still let him walk. He's living with a relative on GPS monitoring. And here's the detail that has people most upset: under the conditions of his release, he's not supposed to be alone with anyone underage. Yet two minors reportedly live in the home where he's been placed. Prosecutors raised exactly that alarm in open court. Then the family fracture. Timothy's biological mother, Shauntel Hudson — who is married to Anna's father — expelled Timothy from the household immediately after Anna's death.
