In this 50th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss Rod Dreher’s new book, Live Not By Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents, about an emerging “soft” or “therapeutic” totalitarianism in the West. First we discuss the latest essay of Bari Weiss in Tablet Magazine, Stop Being Shocked, which, from a different perspective, points to cracks in an American liberalism that most of us have thought could not crack. We ask: What do Jews, Christians, and secular liberals have in common? How have totalitarians tried to control the common narrative? What do we mean when we invoke “freedom”—the freedom that comes from recognizing responsibility and common ties, or freedom from commitments, in concert with the pursuit of worldly comforts? We speak to three of Dreher’s central themes—family, privacy, and community—as being values that we all should rally around.
