Donna Adelson’s Dan Markel murder case put years of family control into the public record, and Wendi Adelson’s testimony supplied one of the most jarring examples. After a judge blocked Wendi from relocating the children to South Florida, Wendi testified that Donna suggested having the boys baptized as Christians, dressing them in Hitler Youth uniforms, and offering Dan Markel $1 million to allow the move. Wendi also told the jury that her mother “micromanaged my life.” Donna’s estranged son Robert Adelson described her as controlling and testified that she “ran the show.” Those descriptions matter because prosecutors presented Donna’s involvement with her adult children as part of the family structure surrounding the murder-for-hire plot that killed Markel in 2014. Charlie Adelson’s relationship with Donna adds another layer. Records obtained after Charlie’s 2023 conviction showed 86 calls to Donna’s phone number over seven days, totaling 2,118 minutes. Financial investigator Mary Hull also testified that Donna managed parts of Charlie’s personal life, including hotels, flights, and bills. Katherine Magbanua gave the jury her own account of that mother-son connection. She testified that Charlie would step away during conversations about the plot to call his mother, then return. Magbanua also testified that Charlie told her Donna had washed cash that was damp and moldy. The defense disputed the state’s interpretation of the money trail and argued Donna wrote Magbanua’s payroll checks at Charlie’s direction. Donna was convicted in 2025 of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in Markel’s killing and sentenced to life in prison. Her direct appeal remains pending before Florida’s First District Court of Appeal, moving the next legal fight from the Tallahassee jury room into appellate briefing.
