Donna Adelson solved a puzzle on Wheel of Fortune in 1989. The answer was MISCHIEF-MAKER. Thirty-five years later, the mischief includes a life sentence without parole for orchestrating the murder of her former son-in-law, FSU law professor Dan Markel. This episode rips every mask off. Not the murder — the mother. The emails she wrote to her daughter Wendi during the divorce and custody battle with Markel are now part of the public record, read to a jury in a Tallahassee courtroom. And they are devastating. Donna called Dan an idiot, a fucker, a bastard, a piece of shit, a narcissist — in writing, in emails to her own daughter. She sat at Wendi's kitchen table and wrote the legal filings herself. She compiled a multi-year travel log to paint a law professor with fifty-fifty custody as an absentee father. She told Wendi the relocation of the children was non-negotiable. When a judge denied it permanently, Donna wrote an email with the subject line "please read — very important" and laid out a psychological warfare toolkit — including instructions to weaponize their shared Jewish faith, fake a religious conversion, offer a million dollars, and dress their two Jewish sons in costumes designed to psychologically destroy their Jewish father. Wendi confirmed on the stand that her mother suggested this. At trial, two of Donna's three children testified against her. Robert — estranged since 2016 — told the jury she was controlling, that she ran the show, and that compliance was the only option. Wendi looked at her mother and said: my mom micromanaged my life. The prosecutor asked if Wendi had once described Donna as someone who operates with emotional subterfuge. She didn't deny it. Her own words. Her own children. Every receipt, read back on the record.
