Trump’s rhetoric toward Iran is highly aggressive—threatening to “knock them down” if they rebuild nuclear or missile capabilities or repress protesters—but Mearsheimer argues this is largely performative. Trump talks tough and occasionally uses limited military force (e.g., one-off missile strikes) but deliberately avoids large, sustained wars or “forever wars.” Mearsheimer contends that Trump is heavily influenced by Israel and Prime Minister Netanyahu, whose goal is a major confrontation with Iran. While Trump must rhetorically appease Netanyahu and pro-Israel constituencies, he resists full-scale escalation, opting instead for symbolic or low-impact strikes that project toughness without changing realities on the ground. The conversation also highlights contradictions in U.S. policy: the U.S. publicly claims to seek negotiations with Iran while simultaneously preparing or carrying out military strikes, as seen in June 2025. This pattern, along with past actions such as withdrawing from the JCPOA and undermining negotiations elsewhere, severely damages U.S. credibility. Mearsheimer argues adversaries—and even allies—now assume the U.S. cannot be trusted to honor verbal or written agreements. From an international law perspective, Mearsheimer says Trump shows little regard for legal norms, citing threats and uses of force with no clear legal authority. Strategically, this behavior reinforces a global perception that U.S. diplomacy is unreliable, pushing states like Russia, Iran, China, and even partners like Ukraine to demand formal, legally binding guarantees rather than relying on U.S. assurances. Overall, the segment portrays U.S. Iran policy as incoherent: aggressive in language, limited in action, driven by domestic and allied pressures, and corrosive to American credibility and long-term strategic interests.
