For a year, the country has been told one version of this story. A thirteen-year-old ran from home, vanished into the orbit of a rising singer, and was found in the trunk of his abandoned Tesla. Missing girl. Famous suspect. Tragic end. The problem with that version is that Celeste Rivas Hernandez was not actually missing for most of it. She was at her cousin's high school graduation in May of 2024. She was on surveillance video in her own backyard in September of 2024. She was back at her mother's house at least twice in the year before she died — once alone, once brought home by police. By every piece of available evidence, she was coming and going. Which means the real question is not who took her. It's who was supposed to be keeping her safe, and why couldn't they. Eleven sheriff's department calls to the Rivas Hernandez home in fourteen months. A seventh-grader enrolled in no school for a full year. An ex-boyfriend on the record saying she'd been telling friends she wanted out. A licensed private investigator publicly asking whether certain family members knew more than they told police. David Anthony Burke — known as D4VD — now faces first-degree murder with special circumstances, abuse of a child under fourteen, and mutilation of remains. He has pleaded not guilty. His defense team led by Blair Berk has drawn a specific line: he "was not the cause of her death." That is not a vague denial. That is a defense theory announced in public.
