For the first time in 40 years, a Californian is set to become a major party’s presidential nominee. Meanwhile, governor Gavin Newsom issues an order to remove homeless encampments from city streets and continues to push back against critics of California’s $20 minimum wage for fast-food workers who claim that the new standard is a job-killer. Hoover senior fellow Lee Ohanian and distinguished policy fellow Bill Whalen, both contributors to Hoover’s California on Your Mind web channel, discuss the Golden State including why vice president Kamala Harris’ ascent to the top of the Democratic presidential ticket upsets the political order in her home state (would Newsom accept a cabinet post should she win?), plus upcoming milestones for two US presidents with California ties – the 50th anniversary of Richard Nixon’s White House resignation and Herbert Hoover’s 150th birthday. ABOUT THE SERIES: Matters of Policy & Politics is a Hoover Institution podcast devoted to matters of governance and balance of power at home and abroad. It is hosted by Hoover fellow Bill Whalen. As the successor to Hoover’s Area 45 podcast, which focused on Trump-era issues and controversies, Matters of Policy & Politics will examine the direction of federal, state, and local leadership and elections, with an occasional examination of national security and geopolitical concerns, all featuring insightful analysis provided by Hoover Institution scholars and guests. The opinions expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Hoover Institution or Stanford University. © 2024 by the Board of Trustees of Leland Stanford Junior University. 🔔 Subscribe for more discussions: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzWwWbbKHg4aodl0S35R6XA 👍 Like and share this video! 🌐 Follow us on social media: Twitter/X: https://x.com/HooverInst Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HooverInstStanford LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hoover-institution-at-stanford-university/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hooverinstitution
