The Siders family case in Vinton County, Ohio, has split into two very different legal tracks. On September 9, a judge accepted a forensic evaluation finding 73-year-old Gary Siders Sr. incompetent to stand trial and not restorable, meaning treatment is not expected to return him to competency. Prosecutor William Archer did not object, and Gary Sr. remains out on a recognizance bond with GPS monitoring while the state decides whether to dismiss the charges or seek civil commitment. Gary Sr. faces 16 counts of child endangerment tied to the 16 children found June 30 inside a Hamden home. Authorities said the children were living in deplorable conditions, with most confined to a small room. Seven were hospitalized, including two who were airlifted for higher-level care. The children were discovered while investigators were executing a warrant connected to a separate case involving a teenage relative. That separate investigation now reaches Elizabeth Siders. She pleaded not guilty September 16 to four additional felony counts involving the teenage relative, on top of the child-endangerment charges involving her own children. Her combined bond is $550,000, and her attorney has requested a competency evaluation; as of the latest hearing, that report had not yet been filed. Gary Siders Jr. and Christina Siders have also requested competency evaluations. That means one defendant may never face a jury while the remaining three are still waiting for the court to determine whether they can proceed at all. This episode follows the procedural fork now reshaping the entire Siders case: what happens when the allegations remain, but competency becomes the first legal question the court must answer.
