Most people think they know the Murdaugh story. The boat crash. The murders. The trial. The verdict. But James Lasdun's new book The Family Man reveals patterns of manipulation going back years before anyone was killed at Moselle — and some of them have never been reported until now. Lasdun uncovered that the accepted narrative of who was driving the boat the night Mallory Beach was killed may have been constructed after the fact. Morgan Doughty's first written statement — given before Alex got to anyone — said Connor Cook took over driving before the crash. That story changed the next day after a whispered conversation between survivors in the hospital. Meanwhile, Alex was prowling the hallways, trying to force his way into patients' rooms, and telling people what to say. Then there's what happened after the staged roadside shooting. Alex sat with a sketch artist and helped create a composite of his supposed attacker — and the portrait looked like Anthony Cook, one of the boat crash survivors. He had a bullet wound in his head and was still trying to point investigators at specific people. The book also uncovers a $5,000 personal check Alex wrote to a Yemassee police chief who was at the Moselle crime scene the night of the murders — backdated by months, never explained. And connections between Alex and a jellyfish-processing operation just miles from Moselle, whose lawyer was convicted decades earlier for laundering drug money through offshore bank accounts. This is Part 1 of our interview with James Lasdun, author of The Family Man: Blood and Betrayal in the House of Murdaugh. The manipulation didn't start at the kennels. It started years before. And once you see the pattern, you can't unsee it. Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
