Welcome to Impact Theory. In today's episode, the team breaks down why Wall Street rallied on a brutal September jobs report: just 29,000 jobs added, July and August revised down, and unemployment up to 4.2%. Tom argues that soft numbers lower the odds of another Fed hike, that the official unemployment rate masks a labor market far off its prior trend, and that the K-shaped economy only works for people who own assets. That leads into AI and jobs, including Tom's fear that AI could create a new "permanent underclass," while he acknowledges the AI jobs story hasn't been written yet. Next, the panel digs into OpenAI's safety shake-up after safety report lead David Robinson resigned and published an essay in The Atlantic calling the company's culture broken. Tom argues for industry-built containment and liability over government regulation, while the panel weighs transparency and an independent, shareholder-free oversight body. After Superchats, the conversation turns to America's mounting national debt and the incentive to inflate it away. Then comes David Grusch's secondhand claim about 7-foot reptilian aliens, which Tom says he doesn't buy. After that, the panel covers South America's rightward swing as Flavio Bolsonaro leads Brazil's first round ahead of an October 25 runoff, including Mike Benz's argument about USAID's role, which Tom flags as unproven. The team also debates whether Trump would put boots on the ground in Iran and whether his ego outweighs his IQ, breaks down the escalating violence in France, and looks at reports of a plague outbreak in Russia. The show wraps with a second round of Superchats, including a tense disagreement over the Cornell 7 case and whether the accused can get a fair hearing amid trial by social media, with both sides agreeing it belongs in a courtroom.
