Bryan Kohberger's guilty plea is under a new kind of scrutiny after a once-sealed filing revealed what his own defense team had told Judge Steven Hippler before the deal was reached. Kohberger is serving four consecutive life sentences without parole, plus ten years for burglary, after pleading guilty in July 2025 to killing Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. The newly unsealed memo says Kohberger's former lawyers had difficulty getting him to rationally understand adverse rulings and fold those losses into a realistic assessment of the case. They asked for more time and expert assistance so they could communicate with him about consequential decisions, including whether to go to trial or resolve the case. They expressly denied that he was legally incompetent. Judge Hippler denied the additional time. Six days later, Kohberger pleaded guilty. That sequence does not prove the plea was invalid, and his new attorney Greg Rauch says exactly that. But Rauch argues it raises a factual question that may matter now: whether Kohberger had enough time and assistance to meaningfully participate in the decision that ended the case. The filing surfaced just days after Kohberger's family publicly backed his post-conviction challenge. His parents and sisters told ABC News they want the 'complete and unvarnished truth' tested through a proper trial. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to examine the family dynamics behind that public support, while the court separately weighs the legal claims around the plea. A hearing on Kohberger's request to remove Judge Hippler and change venue is scheduled for October 15, 2026. His post-conviction evidentiary hearing is set for June 17, 2027. The question now is narrower than the headlines: what, if anything, does the six-day timeline prove about how that guilty plea was reached?
