“We have to disband ICE. We have to melt ICE. We have to abolish ICE. Whatever word you want to use, what we need to get to is the end result that ICE should not exist as it exists and DHS should not exist as it exists.”

She contends that current federal immigration raids are damaging the local economy and causing widespread fear and trauma among the city's population.

“I think of the economic impact the raids have had. Sector of the Los Angeles economy cannot function without immigrant labor. LA's fashion district, construction, hospitality industries are a few examples.”

Targeted immigration roundups and racial profiling provoke stronger turnout from younger voters against the political party conducting them.

“When you start doing these types of things, we start doing roundups, you start doing racial profiling, you start doing, you know, you know, dragging people out of their cars, the people that actually respond first are younger voters, and they're going to come out and vote fairly heavily”

The United States needs to move back toward an orderly, legal immigration system that provides a viable path for people to enter, work, and contribute to the economy.

“The basic premise should be that if people come and they support themselves and they're peaceful people, they're going to be a net contributor to our society. And so once you adopt that basic premise, then you can work out the particulars of how that looks like.”

The Democratic Party should advocate for a path to citizenship for immigrants and clearly articulate that immigrants are beneficial to the country.

“Well, how about we start with immigrants are good. Immigrants help America.”

Democrats have lost the public on immigration by following progressive activists to the left instead of asserting a coherent, balanced theory of the case that combines enforcement with legal pathways.

The United States needs to modernize its outdated immigration system to include legal pathways for long-term residents and essential workers who are law-abiding.

“We owe America a much better immigration system than we have today. Our immigration system is outdated. It needs to be modernized.”

The nation needs an immigration policy that is orderly, enforced sensibly, and compatible with American values.

“But what is also true is that we're a nation of laws. We have borders and we've got to figure out an immigration policy that is orderly and that is fair and is enforced in a sensible way that is compatible with our values”
