Coronagraph instruments are essential for future missions because they enable direct imaging of planets by blocking out the overwhelming light of their host stars.

“So this telescope will also have a coronagraph instrument or a high contrast instrument that'll be able to dim that down. And so once you can actually do that then it becomes possible to look for planets like earth and to see all of the sort of variations in what might be there.”
