Expertise in chess is built on trained pattern recognition and situational understanding rather than purely memorizing sequences.

“and that is the best way from what I understand to get really good at chess is to understand those sort of situational chunks of moves”

He believes chess is a game of perfect information that is best suited for computational study because it lacks the hidden variables and randomness found in games like poker.

“Chess is a complete information game. It is 64 squares black and white. The pieces move exactly the same way. There's no dice that gives weird superpowers that you have to calculate. There's no map that's changing like fog of war, like a video game.”

He notes that chess is addictive because it creates a unique mental state where one feels simultaneously highly intelligent and significantly flawed.

“it hooks people because it's uniquely the one activity that makes you feel incredibly intelligent and incredibly stupid at the same time.”

He expects to win the tournament due to his past experience with the game.

“As you guys know from the podcast I have experience as a kid which let's be honest I'm nowhere near as good as I used to be and I've forgotten a lot of things and I make a [ __ ] ton of mistakes but I think I still have that like that like hard-wired awareness of the board”

He does not feel confident in his chess abilities because he hasn't played since school.

“so yeah I'm going to be completely honest I am not feeling confident at all I haven't played chess since I was in school so that was like when I was what 9 to 11 years old”

Simon Whistler believes that modern chess engines like Stockfish are vastly superior to any grandmaster.

“I imagine if all the grand Masters in the world together and had infinite thinking time they'd probably still get crushed by stockfish”

Personal struggle with attention span and mapping moves ahead prevents achieving a high level of proficiency in chess.

“My issue with chess is one my attention span. >> Okay. >> I really struggle. >> Mhm. And it's hard for me to not play on autopilot >> because I struggle to concentrate, >> which is >> awful for chess. >> Um, >> I also can't um I'm not very good at mapping moves.”
